Why am I Always Hungry?

I'll bet my next meal that you are either eating while reading this article or you are thinking about eating while you are reading this article.  Don't worry, I am too.  Hunger is an interesting sensation, complex and primal.  But why does it happen?

Well, it could be for a multitude of reasons, but today I'll explain 3 common reasons why your hunger pangs may be getting the best of you more often than you'd like.

Not taking in enough fluid

96 ounces a day and 125 ounces a day.  These are the two magic numbers women and men respectively need to remember about their daily intake of fluid, namely of water.  What's more, these numbers are guidelines for SEDENTARY individuals.  If you are active on a daily basis, you need to be imbibing even more fluid to stay healthy and crush hunger.  But how does it help with hunger?

First, drinking that much water causes your stomach to expand while also creating a feeling of fullness, which tells your brain that you are not hungry.  It's not an easy thing to get used to though, drinking that much liquid day in and day out.  To make it easier to stick to the routine, keep a large 2-liter water bottle with you at all times, and each time you finish it, refill immediately.

Not getting enough fiber

Reason #2 you may be experiencing hunger pangs has to do with the content of your diet, specifically the amount of fiber you take in on a daily basis.  25 G daily and 38 g daily.  These are the respective magic numbers for women and men when it comes to daily fiber intake.

The typical diet contains only about half of those respective amounts, so it may be a good idea to look for ways to hack your current diet to include more fiber.  How?  Swap white carbs for brown carbs, add a tablespoon of flaxseed to your morning yogurt, and the list goes on.

Not eating enough veggies

Reason #3 why you are always hungry is a need to add more vegetables to your diet.  At a minimum you should be consuming 3 servings a day of leafy greens and bright colored veggies.  They are low calorie, filled with water and high in fiber.  The perfect solution for hunger and for health!  Throw them in your smoothies, add them to your omelettes, or just snack on them right out of the bag!
